Never before have students faced challenges from a rapidly changing career landscape as they do today. New jobs are emerging and other jobs are becoming obsolete due to economic priorities and advancing technological applications. We need to prepare all students, including those with disabilities, for jobs in this changing job landscape (American Institute of Research, 2013). This makes CCLinNM significant: It creates a unifying, shared vision and goals that brings together public agencies, community service providers, and recognized support systems to guide students to jobs and independent living.
This particularly matters for students with disabilities, who have suffered most from the lack of in-school preparation for careers. This evidence-based project is guided by numerous well-respected articles.

It highlights the state’s efforts to align education with workforce needs, expand access to high-quality career and technical education (CTE), and ensure that all students—especially those from historically underserved communities—are prepared for postsecondary success. The report offers policy recommendations, showcases promising practices, and emphasizes the importance of cross-sector collaboration to build a more inclusive and future-ready education system.
The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) is pursuing a five-year federal grant through the U.S. Department of Education’s Disability Innovation Fund to enhance career-connected learning for students with disabilities. The initiative aims to create inclusive, career-focused educational pathways from middle school through high school graduation. Key components include:
- Career Exploration tailored to students’ interests and abilities.
- Adapted Pathway2Careers Math Curriculum with accommodations like audio and braille.
- Cross-sector partnerships involving educators, employers, and community organizations.
The program is designed to support students across all 13 IDEA disability categories, helping them build skills, confidence, and access to competitive, integrated employment opportunities.
